Contextual Commerce vs. Agentic Commerce: What's the Difference?

Short answer: contextual commerce means buying at the moment of discovery, inside whatever the shopper is already doing: a social feed, a video, a chat. Agentic commerce means an AI agent does the shopping work for the person: it reads the need, searches, compares and, with permission, completes the purchase. Buying inside an AI assistant is both at once, which is why the two terms keep getting mixed up.

What is contextual commerce?

Contextual commerce removes the trip to the store. The product is sold where the shopper already is:

  • a shoppable post or video on a social platform
  • a buy button inside a messaging app
  • a purchase inside a game, an app or a voice assistant
  • a checkout inside a chat with an AI assistant

The idea is older than AI. What changes from one context to the next is the placement and the creative: the right product shown at the right moment, with as few steps as possible between seeing it and owning it.

What is agentic commerce?

In agentic commerce the shopper delegates. They describe what they need ("waterproof hiking boots under $150 that ship by Friday") and an AI agent finds the options, narrows them down and can check out for them.

This is already live in 2026:

  • Shopify's Shop skill (launched 13 October 2026) lets ChatGPT, Claude and other agents search "over 1 billion products from millions of stores" and check out with Shop Pay.
  • Meta's Muse agent searches Shopify Catalog and buys with the user's approval (US).
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini can complete purchases with native checkout, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open standard Google co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart.

The agent never looks at your homepage. It reads product data: titles, attributes, identifiers, price, availability, policies, and the catalogues those come from.

How are they different?

  • Who chooses. In contextual commerce the shopper chooses from what they're shown. In agentic commerce the agent builds the shortlist, and the shopper often sees only two or three options.
  • What wins. Contextual commerce rewards placement and creative. Agentic commerce rewards complete, consistent, structured product data, because that is all the agent can read.
  • Where trust comes from. A shopper trusts a good-looking post. An agent trusts data that agrees with itself across the product page, Google's feed and the catalogue.
  • What you control. In contextual commerce you control the content. In agentic commerce you control the data the agent reads, and that's about it.

Where do they overlap?

A purchase inside an AI chat is contextual (it happens where the shopper already is) and agentic (an agent picked the product). That overlap is growing fastest, and it behaves like agentic commerce: the agent decides what gets shown, based on the product data it can read.

What do contextual commerce platforms do?

They fall into a few groups:

  • Social commerce platforms with shoppable posts, videos and in-app shops
  • Shoppable video and livestream tools that add buy buttons to content
  • Conversational commerce tools that sell inside messaging and chat
  • AI assistants with built-in checkout, the newest group and the one where agentic and contextual commerce meet

All of them depend on the same thing underneath: a product feed or catalogue that is accurate. A shoppable post with the wrong price or a dead size is still a bad experience. For AI assistants it is worse, because a product with missing or contradictory data often doesn't get shown at all.

What should a merchant do first?

Whichever term you use, the work starts with the product record:

  1. Fill in the facts agents filter on: size, colour, material, category, identifiers.
  2. Make every channel agree: the product page, its structured data, Google Merchant Center and Shopify's catalogue should say the same price, stock, returns and shipping.
  3. Check how you appear without your brand name. Search the way a shopper would and see where you show up.

When we checked 24 Shopify stores this way, all 24 had at least one higher-risk mismatch between their site and what Google or Shopify's catalogue reads. The Agentic Commerce Checklist walks through the fixes in order.

UCP Fluent is a Shopify app that does this work: it fills in and checks the product data AI agents read, and publishes the same product record to Google Merchant Center, the product page's structured data and Shopify's agent surface.

SCALE YOUR CATALOG FOR THE AGENTIC ECONOMY.

UCP Fluent maps your store's data into the native, structured profiles required by modern AI shopping models. Take control of your visibility before the shift stabilizes.
